Maybe I like making mini quilts because I can see results more quickly. Yep... I'm pretty sure that's the number one reason! And they are just plain fun to make!
Earlier this month I decided to join Kathleen Tracy's Second Annual Challenge to make one small quilt a month in 2013. (Read more about it here. Go to Kathleen's January 1, 2013 post.) Kathleen has published several wonderful small quilt books. The idea is to make a quilt from one of the books each month this year. Kathleen also has free, small quilt patterns on her website. The kick off quilt for January is a small quilt of your choice from one of her books or patterns. I choose the Scrappy Triangles Doll Quilt, as shown in the picture above. It is a free pattern on Kathleen's website, available here. Kathleen will have more free patterns for small quilts in 2013. You must visit her blog and see for yourself!
At the AQS quilt show in Des Moines last October, I purchased a 2.5 inch, 100ct. light and dark charm pack from the Primitive Gatherings booth. I used some of the charms from the pack to make the doll quilt triangles, and raided my scraps for the two border fabrics. It's a flimsy in this stage. I hope to finish it this weekend, and add it to my short list of 2013 completed projects. It is by no means perfect, but I'm working on lining up those seams! It's scrappy, and that helps to hide my imperfections.
Do you enjoy making mini quilts? How do you display them?

Love your little KT mini, I'll have to try this one. So many quilts, so little time. I just posted mine today also at americanvintagequilts.com., still needs to be quilted.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a sweet little quilt! I recognize many of the fabrics from my own stash. : )
ReplyDeleteI love making minis and display them on end tables and on my walls, and I give them as gifts and leave the decision as to how to display them to someone else.
I have seen KTs mini quilt challenge and it has tempted me for some time. I actually plan on making a mini quilt each month, but I won't always be using her patterns so I am not signing on to the challenge.
Tomorrow I actually have a class with Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings--very excited!
Very, very cute mini, Kathy.
ReplyDeleteI'm lurker on Kathy's yahoo group - always fun to see what everyone makes. Have fun!
LOVE your mini!!! Oh is that ever pretty!!!!! I love to make minis too. And you're right about instant gratification. Plus, it seems like the only thing I have time to do. But they are so fun!!!! I love those little mini charm packs. Especially nice for little projects.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a cute little quilt! Little quilts are just so special! I'm gonna try to participate in her challenge! Remembering Amelia has been one of my favourites since I first saw it! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI do love small quilts. I started making small quilts for doll beds years ago. I would see a doll bed at a garage sale and fall in love with it. Then I would make the mattress, sheet, pillow with pillowcase and of course, the doll quilt. I sold many of these beds and gave to my GD. I also have 2 doll beds with quilts at home for my Mom's antique dolls. I have 2 of KT's books and really should join her group as I love to make them. I hang some on the wall and I love to have a quilt hanging over the back of a chair or child's rocker.
ReplyDeleteGood choice for your first quilt, Kathy! I'm still deciding on mine! I have all of Kathleen's books and I think I might choose one from Remembering Adelia.
ReplyDeleteHappy days!
Oh yes, I enjoy minis, sort of like a mug rug for me - they can be as fast to make as one wants. And such instant gratification too! Your mini is a cutie!!!! You're a "kindred" spirit for sure. LOL
ReplyDelete(BTW - From your sidebar, I see you're doing Darlene's Mystery Quilt as well - look forward to it!)
Your mini quilt is awesome - love all of the fabrics in it. I was in the Jo Morton club for a few years so I have lots of minis and have several of them in a collage on one wall in my sewing room. I also use them on tables, etc.
ReplyDeleteI too followed Kathleen Tracy last year and watched all of those wonderful quilts get made. This year I am doing the same as you. I already finished my first small quilt and am searching for a pattern to do the 2nd one. I love small quilts! Isn't it fun.
ReplyDeleteI've got mini's all through my house. Love your latest creation!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little quilt! The pack of squares was a real find. I like Kathleen's books, too. I like to be able to finish a quilt quickly sometimes, just like you.
ReplyDeleteI have a few small quilts on a wall but for the biggest, it's over a window. My house is very old and the windows let in lots of cold air, so I hang a big quilt over the living room window every winter. It's amazing how it helps! The rest of my small quilts are in a pile in a doll cradle and they get rearranged every time the grandchildren are here.
Just LOVE your new mini quilt ! After just finishing my big quilt I am enjoying working on a few small projects myself ;-)
ReplyDeleteVery cute! I love half square triangles. I haven't made many small quilts. I want to get more of the ones I have on the walls. I have one in the works that I think will look good on my newly painted dining room table. I'm making it out of scraps and want to use up what I have so I don't know how big it will be. I kind of like not knowing!
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed making Some of Kathy's quilts this past year. I usually just lay them on table tops or over the back of a chair. They are fun to make. I'm looking forward to making Lori's little doll quilt as well. I bought a 12" hanger at a quilt show last fall, but ended up giving it as a Christmas gift.
